BIJAPUR: Rajya Rait Sangh will launch an agitation on January 25 in all district places in the State preceded by an awareness programme to be launched from January 16 to protest against certain proposed amendments to APMC Act in the State and its Agriculture policy.
Addressing a joint press conference here on Sunday, Manapade and Basavaraj Tambake of the Sangh said that the proposed changes would make way for the contract farming which would be detrimental for the small and marginal farmers in the State.
Manapade said that Andhra Pradesh land lords entered Karanataka in a big way and its adverse effects were showing now.
Expressing his apprehension about the future of such farmers if foreign players were also allowed to enter farming and marketing activities in the State.
He said that the proposed amendments to APMC Act would hit the farmers and middlemen would take up other professions.
Cultivation was the only profession for farmers and they would have no other option if they were sandwiched between traders and big merchants. He said that there were 51 lakh small farmers and 31 lakh marginal farmers in the State.
Tambake alleged that all the five committees formed to study these important aspects were dominated by bureaucrats only.
